Cat Post: Home Made P-51 Mustang

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

P-51 mustang I like to consider myself a bit of a gear head, and I respect anyone who is well versed in the many areas of fabrication. Being an aviation enthusiast, I have always wanted to build my own aircraft, but as you might guess this is a very big undertaking. Most homebuilt projects take several years to complete, and rarely does the builder save money. People who commit to projects of this nature do so because they love to build and tinker with machines (I am guilty of this). I would like to someday have enough free time (and cash) to start my own project, but for now I will settle for admiring the craftsmanship of others.

One particular craftsman has recently caught the attention of the aviation community by building what has been labeled the Greatest Homebuilt Ever. He has managed to build a 100% replica of a North American P-51 Mustang (click here to learn about the P-51) from scratch. This aircraft was the premier US fighter in WWII and subject of many aviation dreams. I guess Gerry Beck just got tired of dreaming.

I am not sure what this project may have cost but I know that P-51’s typically sell for no less than $1million US. Anyone who thinks that the custom bike builders are talented should take a look at what Gerry Beck has to offer.

Cat Post: My Favorite Cajun Cuisine

crawfish boilIf you have read my abbreviated bio, you already know that I am a Louisiana native. You may also have assumed that it was only a matter of time before I wrote a post about food, and you were correct to make this assumption. I will, for your sake, keep it brief and only mention two of my favorites.

One of my all time favorite dishes is the turducken. A turducken is created by stuffing a turkey with a duck, a chicken, sausage, and or corn bread dressing (and it is semi-boneless). This culinary master piece originated in a town a few miles from my home, and it his since received huge amounts of publicity. I strongly recommend trying one if you haven’t already. They are great for the holidays too.

My other favorite Cajun dish would have to be boiled crawfish (naturally). Crawfish are relatively easy to prepare, and if you are wondering about the taste, just imagine the best shrimp you’ve ever had and multiply that experience by two. They really are that good!

Crawfish are probably considered to be more popular than turduckens, but I have a hard time choosing between the two.

Do you have a dish that is unique to your area?

Cat Post - I Am Ready For Lift Off

I have been a gamer most of my life (I’m 25), but now that I spend so much of my time in front of a computer the last thing I want to do in my spare time is play a video game. Lately I’ve been trying to spend my spare time working on my little Cessna that’s been under extensive repairs for the better part of year now (thanks to Hurricane Katrina) and it is finally ready to fly. I really hope that the weather will be good enough this weekend for a test flight because I am tired of day dreaming about my weekends that were spent flying. I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed.
